A Illa de Arousa

A Illa de Arousa ( official name in Galician language, Spanish La Isla de Arosa ) is a well known as Illa A. island in the center of Arousa and a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia (Spain).

Geography

Arousa has an area of 7 km ². The 5028 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) mostly live in the vicinity of a headland, which combines a small peninsula on which there is the highest elevation of the community with the rest of the island.

Economy and infrastructure

The island is connected to the mainland via a bridge of almost two kilometers in length. This is one of the longest bridges in Spain and cranked with its completion in 1985, the local economy. Previously had to be handled at scheduled journey times crossings and transport with small steamboats.

The island's economy is still based today mainly on fishing and the cultivation of mussels, but tourism does provide increasingly important income.

The main ports are Puerto do Cantino and the landing of O Campo, Chazo and Cabodeiro.

Management

Due to the pressure exerted by their neighbors pressure Arousa has its own local government since 1995. It forms today we are the youngest municipality in Galicia and the only one island.

Attractions

The main attractions are the surroundings of the lighthouse, the island Areoso in the direct vicinity of Arousa and the National Park of Carreirón, which is considered as a special bird sanctuary among other things because of his great blue heron populations. The entire area that overlooks (viewpoint of the saints), from the highest point of the island, the Mirador del Santo.

The European Union has declared Arousa because of its 36 kilometers of coastline (including 11 km of white sandy beaches) nature reserve.
