Abrar Alvi

Abrar Alvi (Hindi: अबरार अलवी, Abarār Alavī; * July 19, 1927, † 18 November, 2009 Mumbai) was an Indian dialogue and screenwriter who was particularly known for his collaborations with director Guru Dutt. In a film he also directed.

Life

Alvi began his work in film in 1953 as assistant during the filming of Guru Dutt's Baaz. The director was aware of him and gave him writing the dialogues for Aar Couple ( 1954). Since then, Alvi was Dutt's regular writer of movie dialogue. For Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959 ) Alvi wrote his first screenplay. After the failure of this film, the director of the next, produced by Guru Dutt film Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962 ) was published under the name Abrar Alvis. Film historians, however, due to the cinematic style assume that here also only has led Guru Dutt directed. Alvi even complained the government itself, Guru Dutt, however, have directed out at the film songs. The film was the 1963 Berlinale competition entry and India's candidate for an Oscar nomination. Alvi won a Filmfare Award for Best Director.

After the death Dutt in 1964 sat Alvi his authorship until the late 1980s on. His most important work of this phase was the co-authorship with Gulzar for the dialogues in Harnam Singh Rawails Sangharsh (1968).
