Adam of Melrose

Adam († September 11, 1222 in Halkirk ) was abbot of Melrose and Bishop of Caithness.

Adam probably came as a child to the monks of Melrose. There he was first Prior and 1207 also Dept. On August 5, 1213, he was appointed Bishop of Caithness selected. In 1218 he went to get on a trip to Rome for the pallium.

William I of Scotland appointed him and hoped for support from him against the aristocracy in the north. Adam tried to impose even secular law in addition to the canon law. According to the Orkney Saga he put the taxes further and further up. This eventually led in 1222 to a rebellion among the peasants, who burnt the house in which he and his followers were.

He was first buried in the church in Skinnet / Sutherland. His successor, Gilbert de Moravia transferred his body in 1239 to Dornoch in the Cathedral built by him.
