Aegean Sea Plate

The Aegean plate, also Aegean microplate or Hellenic Plate is a tectonic plate in southeastern Europe. To the north it borders with the Eurasian plate, on the east by the Anatolian plate, on the south by the African plate, on the west by the Apulian plate.

On the Aegean plate are in the south of Greece, the Peloponnese, the Attica peninsula, the islands of Evia, Crete, Thera and Therasia and the southern Ionian Islands Lefkada to the north, the Cyclades, the Northern Sporades and the South Sporades. The southern boundary of the African plate forms the Hellenic arc south of Crete.

The area is often shattered by the subduction of the African plate beneath the Aegean plate during the plate tectonics of earthquakes.
