Aidu ( German Aitz ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian Ida- Viru. It belongs to the rural community Maidla ( German Wrangelstein ).
Aidu was first mentioned in 1241 in Liber Census Daniæ. The manor of Aidu with its manor house is covered in a document from 1543.
In Aidu is since 1974 one of the two large open pit areas for oil shale in Estonia ( Aidu karjäär ). It is operated by the company Põlevkivi Kaevandamise AS. The mining area and the vegetated areas are in Estonia for special target areas for ecotourism and recreation.
