Alain Kirili

Alain Kirili ( born August 29, 1946 in Paris ) is a French sculptor.

Life and work

Alain Kirili was born in 1946 in Paris. He now lives and works in his native city and in New York City. Works of the Expressionist sculptor David Smith (1906-1965) influenced the development in the early years of his work.

1966 studied in Paris Alain Kirili East Asian calligraphy at the Korean painter UngNo Lee ( 1904-1989 ). During this time he came into contact with the artists and intellectuals of the literary-critical movement around the literary magazine Tel Quel around. In particular, with Philippe Sollers and Julia Kristeva, with whom he has a longstanding friendship links. In the autumn of 1977, he married the photographer Ariane Lopez- Huici.

Kirili works with bronze, steel and aluminum, but also with sound. From the year 1978 he traveled several times to India and there refined his knowledge of the processing of sound. He also makes a series of photos of the Yoni - Lingam liturgy in Thanjavur.

Across the street from the studio of Barnett Newman rented Kirili in the 1980s a loft in the White Street. Kirili asserts in his biography that he is since 1982 professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York - but is not listed on the website of SVA ..

There are regular Music & Sculpture Events in collaboration with Jérôme Bourdellon, Thomas Buckner and many others instead.

Renowned art critic and art historian such as Thierry Dufrêne, Robert C. Morgan, Robert Rosenblum and Kirk Varnedoe have written and published texts on the sculpture of Kirili.
