Alexander Bernstein, Baron Bernstein of Craigweil

Alexander Bernstein, Baron Bernstein of Craig Weil ( born March 15, 1936 in London, † April 12, 2010 ) was a British politician ( Labour ) and Managing Director of Granada TV plc.

Life

Bernstein, whose great-grandfather came to Britain as an immigrant from Latvia, grew up near Bognor Regis and attended the Stowe School in Buckingham in Buckinghamshire. He studied Economics ( Economics) at St John's College, University of Cambridge.

After graduation, he began his professional career in 1959 as assistant manager of a cinema in London's Brixton. In 1961 he went as a trainee at Granada TV in Manchester, a British media company, which had been founded by his uncle Sidney Bernstein and his father Cecil Bernstein. From 1964 to 1979 he was a Director (Director) at the Granada Group plc, from 1971 to 1975 he was co-managing (Joint Managing Director) of Granada Television Ltd.. From 1977 to 1986 he was Chief Executive Officer ( Chairman ) of Granada TV Rental Ltd.. From 1979 to 1996 he was CEO of Granada Group plc. In 1996, after 32 years with the company, Bernstein withdrew from the company's management and went into retirement.

Amber was raised on 15 May 2000 Life Peer as Baron Bernstein of Craig Weil, of Weil Craig in the County of West Sussex. He was since 1966 Head (Director) and co-owner of the Waddington Galleries in Cork Street in London. He was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester and at the Old Vic Theatre. He founded the Quercus Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting young theater practitioners, and was also a trustee ( Trustee ) of the Theatres Trust.

His hobbies counted Bernstein skiing and gardening. Bernstein died of heart failure.

Family

Amber married in 1962 Vanessa Anne Mills and has a son and a daughter with her. The couple divorced in 1993. In 1995 he married Angela Mary Serota, the ex-wife of Nicholas Serota.
