Ali Akbar Salehi

Ali Akbar Salehi (Persian علیاکبر صالحی; born 24 March 1949 in Karbala, Iraq) is an Iranian scientist, university teacher and former Vice- President and Foreign Minister of Iran. After the Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was dismissed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 13 December 2010, Salehi took over as acting the office of the Iranian Foreign Minister. Until May 26, 2011 Salehi Head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization ( AEOI ) and for the national nuclear program was responsible. Therefore Salehi was on sanctions lists of Europe, which are intended to prevent the proliferation of nuclear and missile technology to Iran.

Life

After school he studied at the American University of Beirut and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. ) from. In 1977 his PhD Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D.) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After his return to Iran, he took a teaching position as Associate Professor at Sharif University of Technology and later from 1988 to 1993 and Chancellor of this University. As such, he was also a member of the Iranian Academy of Sciences and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics ( ICTP ) in Italy.

In 1998, his appointment as Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA ), and he held this post until 2004. In this role, he signed on 18 December 2003 for Iran, the Additional Protocol to the protection agreement.

On 20 January 2004 he was appointed Scientific Advisor to the Foreign Ministry. After the election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005 was traded Salehi as foreign minister, but then not called.

On 16 July 2009 he was appointed as the successor of Gholam Reza Aghazadeh Head of the Iranian nuclear program, and has since August 3, 2009 Minister of Atomic Energy in the second cabinet Ahmadinejad. This was triggered by the appointment of Reza Malekzadeh the Iranian deputy foreign minister. Malekzadeh is considered a close associate of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
