Alquízar

Alquizar is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Artemisa. Until 31 December 2010, it was part of the former province of La Habana.

The city is located southwest of San Antonio de los Baños and west of Güira de Melena. The settlement was first mentioned in 1616 as a coffee plantation was built. 1826 a garrison was stationed, the present settlement was officially founded in 1879.

The municipality counts 29,616 inhabitants in an area of 205 km ², which corresponds to a population density of 144.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The municipality is divided into five boroughs ( Barrio ): Guanímar, La Paz, Pueblo, San Andrés and Tumbadero.
