Alva, Clackmannanshire

Alva ( Scottish Gaelic Allmhagh Beag or Ailbheach ( rocky ) ) is a town in the Scottish Unitary Authority Clackmannanshire. Alva is about eight kilometers north-east of Stirling and three kilometers north of Alloa located at the foot of the Ochil Hills and belongs to the Hill Foot's Villages. The Forth flows a few miles, a few hundred meters south of Devon. Alva is connected by the A91 to the road network. In 2001 Alva recorded 5181 inhabitants.

History

Historically, the textile production was an important economic activity in Alva and contributed significantly to its development. Here, the companies took advantage of the numerous mountain streams along the slopes of the Ochils to generate energy. So there tweed, tartan and knitwear have been produced since the 16th century. In the 1880s, eight mills worked in Alva.
