AMA Superbike Championship

The AMA Superbike Championship is the American Superbike Championship and is held under the auspices of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) as part of the AMA Pro Racing series. Other classes are the AMA Supersport Championship, AMA Superstock Championship and the AMA Formula Xtreme.

The championship has been held since 1976 and is regarded, along with the British Superbike Championship ( BSB), as the strongest national Superbike championship.

The technical regulations of the AMA Superbike is very liberal and allows, for example, modifications to the engine, which are banned in most other Superbike Championships.

The most successful driver in the history of the series are Doug Polen, Scott Russell and Mat Mladin. In addition, many successful American motorcycle World Championship riders, such as Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson and Nicky Hayden gained experience in the AMA Superbike.

Technical Regulations

Homologation

  • Only homologated motorcycles used in the Superbike Championship.
  • Superbike motorcycles must be approved for public roads and available at retailers.
  • The minimum import request per model to the manufacturer depends on the retailers in the U.S. starting (about 150 to 400 units)

  • Displacement of 901-1000 cm ³
  • Four-stroke engines
  • Two or more cylinders

Weight

  • Minimum 370 pounds ( about 168 kg) without fuel
  • Minimum 375 pounds ( 170 kg) with fuel
