Amado Alonso

Amado Alonso ( * September 13 1896 in Lerín, † May 26, 1952 in Arlington ( Massachusetts)) was a Spanish linguist and Hispanist who taught in Argentina and in the United States.

Life and work

Alonso went to school in Pamplona and studied from 1915 in Madrid Ramón Menéndez Pidal in. From 1922 to 1923 he was a lecturer at the Berlin University.. 1927 he received his doctorate with the work Estructura de las " Sonatas " de Valle- Inclan (1928, in: Materia y forma en poesía, Madrid in 1955 and in Ramón del Valle- Inclan, edited by Ricardo Domenech, 1988, pp. 85 - 117). From 1927 to 1946 he headed the Institute of Philology at the Universidad de Buenos Aires ( which later became the name of the "Instituto de Filología y Literaturas hispanicas Dr. Amado Alonso " received ). From 1946 until his death he taught at Harvard University in the Smith Chair.

Alonso founded and directed the magazine Revista de Filología Hispanica (Buenos Aires from 1939 to 1946 ) and Nueva Revista de Filología Hispanica (Mexico 1948-1952 ). He translated into Spanish Ferdinand de Saussure ( Curso de Lingüística General, Buenos Aires, 1945), also Karl Vossler ( Filosofía del lenguaje, Madrid 1940, Buenos Aires 2008).

Alonso was honorary doctorate from the University of Chicago ( 1941).

2001 was established in his honor in Lerín Fundación Amado Alonso to life.
