Amaechi Igwe

Amaechi Igwe (born 20 May 1988 in Belmont, California) is an American soccer player who also has a Nigerian passport. Since 2011 he has been active in the German third division side SV Babelsberg 03.

Career

Clubs

Igwe played at Santa Clara University, first as a striker. After just one year, 2007, he moved to New England Revolution in Major League Soccer. He initially played in the second team, his professional debut was on April 9, 2008 game against the Kansas City Wizards. In 2008 he won with his team the North American SuperLiga. In the following two seasons, he played regularly, but was able to fight for a regular place.

For the 2010/11 season Igwe moved free transfer to newly promoted FC Ingolstadt in the 2nd Bundesliga. Due to a serious knee injury he incurred in the pre-season, Igwe could not be used throughout the season so far. His first competitive match after a long injury break, he played on 16 April 2011 for the second team of the Ingolstadt in Bavaria fünftklassigen league. Igwe was also in the following years to no use in the first team, and after the season, both parties agreed to a resolution of the contract.

For the season 2011/12 Igwe joined the third division side SV Babelsberg 03. His first try for the Potsdam he had in the 0-2 defeat in the first round of the DFB Cup against MSV Duisburg on July 30, 2011. Three days later he made his debut against Rot -Weiss Erfurt and in the third League.

National

Igwe played for the U-17 national team of the United States and participated in the U-20 team at the U -20 World Cup 2007, where the U.S. reached the quarterfinals.

Private

His father Tony Igwe took part in Nigeria for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico from 1969 to 1973 and was captain of the Nigerian national football team. His brother and his sister Chioma Kelechi also played at the Santa Clara Broncos.
