Amalia of Neuenahr

Amalia of Neuenahr -Alpen ( born April 6, 1539 Alps; † April 10, 1602 ibid ) was by inheritance reigning Countess of Limburg and by marriage Electress of the Palatinate.

Life

Amalia was born as the eldest daughter of Gumprecht II von Neuenahr -Alpen and Cordula von Holstein -looking castle on Castle Alps in the reign of Alpen am Niederrhein.

She lost her mother when she was three years old. After his father's death in 1556, she was together with her half brothers and sisters Magdalena and Adolf at Moers Castle, the residence of the guardian and uncle, the historically significant reformation Count Hermann of Neuenahr- Moers, educated and trained. The Roman Catholic baptized Amalia became Lutheran brought up by her stepmother Amoena of Daun -Falkenstein and by her guardian.

Eighteen year old, she married in Vianen in January 1557 Henry of Brederode, one of the later protagonists of the Dutch struggle for freedom. She moved in with him at Castle Batenstein in the rule Vianen. After his early death in the spring of 1568 she married April 25, 1569 in Heidelberg with the Calvinist Elector Frederick III. of the Palatinate. Shortly before, came in Cologne the youngest daughter Emilia from the marriage of William of Orange and Anna of Saxony on the world. She was named after Amalia, who led the mother's household at this time.

After the death of her second husband Amalia was regent from 1579 to 1587 in the reign of Vianen, which she had inherited from her first husband. In 1589 she inherited from her half-brother Adolf, the county of Limburg and in 1590 she received from her half-sister Magdalena the rights of the reign Alps, Helpenstein, rule Linnep and Erbvogtei Cologne. 1586 occupy the Spanish dominion Alps and began the Counter-Reformation. Maurice of Orange was able to free the rule during his campaign in 1597 and after the siege of Moers again. 1600 Amalia returned by Alps back, made the Counter-Reformation reversed and spent her last years as regent. She died on April 10, 1602 Castle Alps and was buried on April 20 in the crypt of the Evangelical Church in Alpine. Henry of Brederode, her first husband, who was buried in Gemen, was exhumed and transferred to the Alps, where he then beside Amalia found his final resting place.
