Ambilly

Ambilly is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Ambilly is on 426 m above sea level. Level, about 1 km west of Annemasse and 6 km east of the city of Geneva (air line). The municipality extends on the plateau between the lowlands of the Arve in the south and the Foron in the north, on the outskirts of Annemasse, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​1.25 km ² municipal area includes a section at the bottom Arve Valley. The northern boundary runs along the slightly meandering Foron (tributary of the Arve ). From here, the communal land extends southwards across the plateau of Ambilly ( here is 435 m above sea level. History

The territory of Ambilly was already inhabited in Roman times, which could be detected based on foundations of a Roman estate and numerous other finds. For the first time Ambilly is mentioned in writing in 859 under the name Ambiliaci; of 1022, the name Ambiliacum is preserved. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Ambilius and means something like estate of Ambilius.

In the Middle Ages Ambilly initially belonged to the bishops of Geneva, later the Counts of Geneva. In the 14th century, the village came to the Counts of Savoy. Pursuant to the Treaty of Turin in 1816 lost Ambilly his entire area north of the Foron to Vandœuvres in the Swiss canton of Geneva. Shortly after 1818, the municipalities Ambilly and Gaillard were merged to form the new municipality Ambilly -Gaillard in 1843 but was again separated.

Population

With 6001 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Ambilly one of the larger towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Economy and infrastructure

Ambilly until the 20th century, a predominantly coined by agriculture village. Since the 1950s, it gradually developed into a residential suburb of Annemasse and Geneva.
