Ambrosius Blarer

Ambrose Blarer of greed Mountain, also Blaurer ( born April 4, 1492 Konstanz, † December 6, 1564 in Winterthur ) was a theologian, poet and reformer hymns.

Life and work

Ambrose Blarer was the son of Constance merchant and alderman Augustin Blarer († 1504) and his wife Catherine Mässlin. He was the brother of Gerwig Blarer, Thomas and Margaret Blarer Blarer. He was also a fellow student and friend of Philipp Melanchthon. As Benedictine monk and prior of the monastery Alpirsbach in the Black Forest, he became acquainted with the writings of Martin Luther. In 1522 he left the monastery and in 1525 he was appointed as a preacher in his hometown, where he introduced the Reformation along with his brother Thomas and his cousin John Zwick. This he did also in the Swabian imperial cities of Ulm, Esslingen am Neckar, Augsburg, Lindau and Isny and from 1534 by order of Duke Ulrich in the Duchy of Württemberg. He was also active as a reformer in smaller places, such as Albstadt -Tailfingen.

Blarer was with Catherine Ryf, called by Blidegg, a former nun from the nearby monastery Munsterlingen, married since 19 August 1533 and had with her four children, of which only the son Gerwick survived childhood.

After a few years in which he in the upper part of the Duchy ( " whether the Staig " with Tübingen center ) had led the church, led him in 1538 disputes in the involved him its mediating between Luther and Huldrych Zwingli position with the strict Lutherans, back to Constance. 1548, he was hospitalized recatholicization flee from here again and knew parish services in several communities in Switzerland.

Ambrose Blarer is considered one of sprachgewaltigsten Upper German hymn writers.
