André Roch

André Roch ( born August 21, 1906 in Hermance at Geneva, † November 19, 2002 ) was a Swiss mountaineer, mountain guide, ski racer, avalanche protection expert and author.

Life

André Roch was introduced by his father Maurice Roch in the mountains, he was young and keen skier and mountaineer. He studied at the ETH Zurich and the U.S. engineering, joined the Academic Alpine Club Zurich and in 1928 the Swiss Alpine Club.

As a member of the student national ski team, he was 1926 World Champion in the downhill. In 1934 he reached the Karakoram with ski a height of over 7000 meters above sea level.

In the Alps it get difficult ascents, including 25 first ascents, plus 27 first ascents or ascents came on several expeditions in the Himalayas.

In 1938 he took part in an expedition to Greenland of the Academic Alpine Club Zurich, while 16 peaks were first climbed.

In 1952 he reached the South Col with a Geneva expedition on Mount Everest. Thus, the route was prepared on the Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit the following year.

During 30 years, Rochelle worked as an internationally recognized expert on avalanche protection WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos.

1936 Roch was appointed to Aspen (Colorado) to collaborate in the construction of the ski resorts. He was a co-founder of the Aspen Ski Club, put ski routes and gave lessons.

In addition to a large number of honors of the Swiss Alpine Club and the Academic Alpine Club Zurich appointed him an honorary member.

Roch has published several books, made ​​films and was a gifted painter. He was twice married, had a son and two daughters. A daughter died in 1962 in a climbing accident in which he himself was there.
