Angelo II Acciaioli

Angelo Acciaioli ( born April 15, 1340 Florence, † May 31, 1408 in Pisa) was a bishop and cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life and work

Angelo Acciaioli came from an old noble Florentine family, which appears partly also under the spellings Acciajuoli and Acciaiouli.

He entered the clerical state, received minor orders and was canon at Patras in Achaia principality, where at that time was a Latin archbishopric.

On December 3, 1375 he was elected Bishop of Rapolla ( to 1386 ), dated June 3, 1383, he was also bishop of Florence.

Pope Urban VI. rose Angelo Acciaioli in the consistory of December 17, 1384 cardinal with the title of Church of San Lorenzo in Damaso. In this capacity he participated in the conclave of 1389, in which Pope Boniface IX. was chosen; he himself had been in the ballot one of the most promising candidates Pope. The new pope sent him as legate to the kingdom of Naples to Ladislaus of Anjou as a tutor at his throne claims support; on May 29, 1390, he crowned him in Gaeta King of Naples.

On June 8, 1403, he traveled again as papal legate to Hungary, where the Archbishop of Esztergom crowned in Zadar, in his presence, Ladislaus of Anjou on August 5, King of Hungary.

In the conclave of 1404, Cardinal Acciaioli participated in the election of Pope Innocent VII part. This appointed him archpriest of St. Peter's in 1405 and dean of the Sacred College. On August 29, the year he was promoted to Vice- Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church. 1406 led the prelate the difficult conclave which Gregory XII. elected pope. The pontiff gave him in the subsequent period, the reform of the Roman Benedictine convent of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

Angelo Acciaioli died on May 31, 1408 in Pisa and was buried in the local Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta; In 1409 he was reburied in the local to Florence Charterhouse San Lorenzo, his uncle, Niccolò Acciaiuoli - had founded (1310 1365 ). The brother of the Cardinal was Nerio I. Acciaiuoli, Duke of Athens ( † 1394).
