Aniane

Aniane ( Occitan Aniana ) is a commune with 2822 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Hérault in the Languedoc- Roussillon region; it belongs to the district Lodève and Canton Aniane. The place is located at the output of the Hérault Gorges ( Gorges de l' Hérault) about 35 kilometers northwest of Montpellier.

History

Aniane goes back to the same monastery, founded by St. Benedict of Aniane end of the 8th century. The abbey was completely destroyed in 1562. 1845 a prison was built on the site.
