Anthony Peter Khoraish

Anton Peter Cardinal Khoraiche, Antonius Koraiche and Antoine -Pierre Koreiche, ( born September 20, 1907 in Ain Ebel, Lebanon; † 19 August 1994 Bkerke, Lebanon ) was Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and all the East. His motto was: " Gloria Libani data est ei".

Life

Anton Peter Khoraiche grew up in his birthplace of Ain ​​Ebel, a small village in southern Lebanon. He was a very hardworking, talented and pious pupil at the local primary school. At the age of 13 he began at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, a philosophical and theological studies. At age 16, he earned a doctorate in philosophy and moved to Beirut at the Université Saint -Joseph, where he began with a retrospective study of theology. Khoraiche was ordained priest on 12 April 1930. After ordination, he taught at a Catholic school in Tyre. From 1930-1940 he was also a member of the Université La Sagesse in Beirut, followed by the offices as Patriarchal Vicar of Palestine and Chairman of the Maronite dishes in the Holy Land. He was appointed Vicar General of the archeparchy Tyros the Maronites and provided his activities there from 1940 until 1950.

Bishop

On April 25, 1950, the appointment was made auxiliary bishop in Sidon ( Maronite ) with simultaneous appointment as Titular Bishop of Tarsus dei Maroniti. Patriarch Antony I. Arida consecrated him on 15 October 1950 for the Bishop, co-consecrators were the archbishops Ignace Ziadé and François Ayoub. From 1955-1957 he was the Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Sidon. The Office of the Bishop of Sidon was transferred to him on 25 November 1957. He has participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council between 1962-1965.

Patriarch and Cardinal

The Maronite Synod of Bishops ( Bishops' Conference with a comparable) chose him on February 3, 1975 Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and all the East as the successor of Paul II Meouchi, this choice was confirmed by the Holy See on 15 February 1975. As patriarch he bore the name Anthony II Khoraiche. He was also Chairman of the Bishops' Synod of the Maronite Syriac Church of Antioch and to 1985 President of the Assembly of Patriarchs and Bishops of Lebanon. Pope John Paul II elevated him on 2 February 1983, the second cardinal in the Maronite church and also gave its approval for age-appropriate resignation on April 3, 1986. Until his death on 19 August 1994, he performed the duties as Patriarch emeritus.
