Antoine Kohn

Antoine " Spitz" Kohn ( born 1 November 1933, Luxembourg (city), † November 24, 2012 ) was a Luxembourgian football player and coach. His coaching career he finished in 1989.

Playing career

Association

Kohn began his career in 1949 with the Luxembourg giants Jeunesse Esch. At the age of 16 years, the former attacker earned a regular place. 1951 and 1954 he won the National Division with the club. In his last year for the club, also the Coupe de Luxembourg was leveled and thus made the double perfect. Due to very good performances, some French clubs from Reims, Nancy and Valenciennes were aware of him. Although he graduated from the latter for an audition, but to change it did not come.

In the summer of 1954, it pulled the striker in a roundabout way but abroad. Kohn took this year at the International Military Championships in Brussels, where he met Adolf Patek, former coach of the Luxembourg team and former coach of Karlsruher SC, who advised him to sign with the German club. With this change was " Spitz" Kohn final professional footballer. Under coach Patek was reached in 1955, the final of the DFB-Pokal and could beat Schalke 04 3-2 there. The following year, the club champion of the Oberliga Süd was and thus qualified for the final round of the German Cup. Here the KSC was beaten only in the final against Borussia Dortmund. However, it was defended with a 3-1 victory over Hamburger SV Cup. In this case, the center-forward scored the last goal for his team and thus decided the game. The last success with Karlsruhe Kohn was able to celebrate the Südmeisterschaft again in 1958 before moving to Switzerland for FC Basel.

During his time in Germany Luxembourg was appointed again to the military. How important it was for the team, it was obvious that, Patek repeatedly tried to free him for games from the service. After only one year of the attackers went to the Netherlands, where he joined Fortuna '54 from Sittard. Four personally good years were the result. For the season 1964/65 Kohn decided to competitors Sport Club Enschede to go, but returned for the following season back. Between 1965 and 1968, the striker was again for three years the Dress Enschede, before he announced his career end.

National

Kohn was 1953-1965 National Player of Luxembourg. He made his debut on 6 April 1952 on in the 2:3 defeat against a Belgian B- team. In sixteen games, he scored six goals for the colors of his country. He marked his first goal on September 20, 1953 in the 1:6 defeat to France, as Kohn could einnetzen for interim compensation.

Coaching career

During his active career Kohn was a qualified trainer. This took six years before he graduated.

Four years after his active professional career occupied Kohn his first head coaching job. Back then signed him to the FC Twente Enschede. With seven years without interruption in this position, he holds the record as a trainer for Twente. Greatest success this time was winning the KNVB Cup 1977. 1975 one also reached the final of the UEFA Cup, where they lost 0-0 on aggregate and 1:5 in the second leg against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

After the paths between coach and club parted in 1979, Kohn was signed to the Go Ahead Eagles. According to twelfth place in the league, the relationship between both parties but was stopped again after one year. So it moved to Belgium Kohn for top club FC Bruges, but there was dismissed after poor performance soon. For the season 1982/83 the football coach hired again at Twente Enschede, but even there it was not optimal, and Kohn was replaced by Fritz Korbach. In 1988 he was appointed by Ajax Amsterdam for a short time as a coach. After five games the following season the club appointed him again to the coach. So he managed to lead the team into the 1988 final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, but failed there at KV Mechelen. As assistant acted with him Louis van Gaal. Together, they were runners-up. This was Kohn's last coach station.

In the meantime, he worked as a scout for the SC Heerenveen and Udinese Calcio.

Trivia

  • During his successful years in Germany he proposed the then national coach Sepp Herberger to change in the German national soccer team. However, Kohn refused.
