Antonio Gava

Antonio Gava ( born July 30, 1930 in Castellammare di Stabia, Naples province; † August 8, 2008 ) was an Italian politician of the Christian Democracy (DC).

Life

MP and Minister

Gava came from the influential Neapolitan family Gava, the politics of Naples codetermined crucial after the deposition of Mayor Achille Lauro over many years. His father Silvio Gava was a longtime Senator and Justice and Minister of the Treasury. After school he studied law and was after graduation ( Degree in giurisprudenza ) worked as a lawyer and journalist. Later, he was temporarily Professor of Public Finance.

He initially worked in the province of politics and was the president of the province of Naples for his involvement in the failed economic policies in the province and the city of Naples the nickname " Il Padrino" ( The Godfather ).

On May 25, 1972, he was elected as a candidate of the DC as a member of the Camera dei deputati ( Chamber of Deputies ) and represented in this until April 22, 1992 constituency Naples.

The mid-1970s he rose to within the DC and was appointed in 1975 by Amin gates Fanfani, the political secretary of the party to head the local government section in the party leadership, although a co-responsibility for mismanagement within the municipality of Naples he was accused of.

After he was first Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Giovanni Goria, before he was Minister of the Interior 1990 of 13 April 1988 to 16 October.

He was then October 30, 1990 Parliamentary Secretary of the DC fraction and remained in this position until his retirement from the House of Representatives on April 22, 1992.

Senator, the decline of the DC and conviction for Mafia connections

On April 23, 1992, he was a member of the Senato della Repubblica (Senate ) and took over June-September 1992, the Office of the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Constitutional Affairs. At the same time he was from July 1992 to March 1993 Chairman of the DC Group in the Senate.

The charges and allegations against him and other leaders ultimately contributed to the decline in the DC and the final resolution of the most influential party of Italy in the postwar period. Due to the allegations of corruption and mafia connections he was later sentenced by a court to five years ' imprisonment.
