The Apalachicola River near Fort Gadsden, Florida

The Apalachicola River [ æpəlætʃɪkoʊlə ] is a 180 km long river in north-western U.S. state of Florida. The vast catchment area of the river covers an area of 50,505 km ² and includes the extreme east of Alabama and the west of Georgia. The river's name is derived from the people of Apalachicola, who once lived along the river. The distance between the mouth and the farthest from the mouth source of the catchment area is approximately 800 km.

It is produced in the city Chattahoochee near the border with Georgia, where the Chattahoochee River and Flint River unite, about 95 km north-east of Panama City. The actual point of its formation is flooded by the Lake Seminole, which is dammed by the Jim Woodruff Dam. The river follows a generally southerly direction into the Gulf of Mexico. He happened to Bristol and receives in the north of the Gulf County from the west to the Chipola River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the lower reaches of the river on a regular basis to allow navigation.

It flows through the center of the Florida Panhandle. He thereby passed the western part of the Apalachicola National Forest and primarily on the last 50 km humid and marshy areas where it joins with the Chipola River and eventually pours in the same city in the Apalachicola Bay.

During the British colonial era, the river formed the boundary between East Florida and West Florida, which is why he still serves as a natural border between the Western and Eastern districts. He is also - with the exception of the area at its mouth - the border river of the two applicable in Florida time zones. In the territory east of his bank, the Eastern Standard Time (EST ) holds, while the timing of the western part of the country is based on Central Standard Time ( CST).

It is believed that the early Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca had near the estuary found an Indian village, which he called " Apachalen ".
