History

The Areeiro Metro Station was officially opened on 18 June 1972 as part of the extension of Anjos after Alvalade in operation. This part was the last to be finished second construction phase of the Lisbon Metro. At this time, a network with two line branches from a total of 20 stations was thus created within sixteen years.

For the stations of the last phase of construction throughout the architect Dinis Gomes was responsible, which was based on the standardized station design by João Falcão e Cunha, who had designed the majority of the existing stations. He also chose the Areeiro station two 70 meter long platforms which were designed for four-car trains. The station was on the north side of the porch, and three outputs, which open on both the aboveground Praça de Areeiro (today Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro ) or on the street Avenida Padre Manuel de Nóbrega. Even here the artist Maria Keil was responsible for the design of the station. She chose Azulejos with green and white vertical stripes, on which gold-colored, interwoven wavy lines are shown. The station hall is in the northern part significantly lower than in the south, as the road tunnel Avenida João XXI. is at right angles to the underground track.

Since the opening of the railway station is not particularly much has changed, only the name line and the possible range goals differed. Today the station is part of the Linha Verde (Green Line ) between Telheiras and Cais do Sodré. To cope with the rising end passenger flow on the line, the Metropolitano de Lisboa, EPE the stations on the green line to six-car compositions decided to extend the scope of a general renovation of 70 meters to 105 meters, as, on the other lines be able to use.
