Arguel (Doubs)

Arguel is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Arguel is located at 380 m, about 5 km southwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the western Jura in a hollow above Beure and south of the Doubstals.

The area of ​​4.98 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the western Jura. The northern part of the area has greater differences in relief and is taken from the system of law - edge chain, which runs parallel to the Doubs Valley. With 507 m is achieved at the height southwest of the village is the highest elevation of Arguel. The little valley of Arguel opens to the northeast to the Valley of the Ruisseau des Mercureaux which opens at Beure in the Doubs. By a striking projection on which stood the medieval castle, it is separated from the Doubs Valley. To the south, the municipality's area on the part of meadow and arable land, part of the forest -lined plane of the so-called first Jura plateau extends to the edge of the Grand Bois.

Neighboring communities of Arguel are Beure in the north, Fontain in the east, Montrond- le -Château in the south and Pugey in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Arguel formed a significant rule under the suzerainty of the Free County of Burgundy. The castle was destroyed in 1674 by troops of King Louis XIV. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

The village church of Arguel was built in the late 17th century to the part with the stone material of the ruined medieval castle. It has remarkable wooden statues from the 15th and 16th centuries. On the narrow ledge between Arguel and the Doubs Valley are the ruins of the castle Arguel. The Fort Rolland was built in 1871 as part of the fortification system around the city of Besançon.

Population

With 249 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Arguel one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the range between 60 and 90 people, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has nearly tripled.

Economy and infrastructure

Arguel was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village.
