Artyom, Russia

Artyom ( russian Артём ) is a city with 102 603 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Primorsky region in Russia, 53 km north-east of the Pacific metropolis Vladivostok.

The town consists mainly of one-to five-story apartment buildings in brick or bricks. But there is also a relatively large number of wooden private houses.

History

The town was founded in 1924 near a coal mine. This was (actually Fyodor Sergeyev ) named after the famous revolutionary, nicknamed Artyom. On October 26, 1938 the site of the city status was awarded.

In 2004, there were numerous incorporations, whereby the population of the city of 64,000 rose to over 100,000. This Artyom was a major city. Were incorporated, inter alia, the urban settlements Artjomowski, Sawodskoi and Uglowoje.

Economy and Transport

In the city there are several industrial companies, mainly in the consumer goods industry (furniture and clothing company ). There are in the city also a notable number of joint ventures.

Coal mining has so far been based on the local economy. However, it is losing in importance, as the coal reserves are running out.

In the urban area is the largest marshalling yard of Primorye, twelve million tons of goods to Vladivostok and 24 million tons annually here transshipped to Nakhodka.

The Vladivostok Airport is located approximately two kilometers north of the city.
