Ashhurst

Ashhurst is a small agricultural town in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Administratively it belongs to Palmerston North. Ashhurst is 14 kilometers northeast of the city.

The main street of the village, the Cambridge Avenue, obtained after leaving the place of the name Pohangina Road and runs along the Pohangina River in the place Pohangina.

Northeast of the village are the southern foothills of the Ruahine Ranges, with its highest peak, the 920 m high peak Wharite on which there is a TV and radio stations. To the east of Ashhurst is a wind farm in the mountains.

Traffic

The traffic engineering significance of Ashhurst results from its location at the western end of the Manawatu Gorge, which it is close to the best road and rail link between the east and west coast of the southern North Island. The SH3 and the Palmerston North- Gisborne Line railway leading directly south past Ashhurst.

In Ashhurst is one of the three road bridges and one of two railway bridges over the Manawatu River in the vicinity of Palmerston North.

Naming

Ashhurst was named after Lord Henry Ashhurst, belonged to the surrounding lands. He was a director of the Emmigrants 'and Colonists ' Aud Corporation. Founded in England in 1867 English company operated the settlement of a 430 km ² area between Manawatu River and the Rangitikei River, the so-called " Manchester Blocks". The name of the Māori for the area is " Raukawa " after their name for the native aromatic plant here Pseudopanax edgerleyi.
