Ashley Delaney

Ashley Delaney (* April 11, 1986 in Sale, Victoria ) is an Australian swimmer.

Career

Delaney's specialty is back distances. For the first time he caught at the Australian Short Course Championships in 2005 attention when he finished fourth in the 100 meters back of it and barely missed the podium.

His first title he won at the 2006 Oceania Swimming Championships in Cairns, when he took both over 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters backstroke and together with the 4 × 100 meter medley relay title. In the same year he missed at the Trials in third in the 100 meters back almost as well as sixth and eight over 50 meters and 200 meters backstroke clearly qualifying for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

2008 was by winning the bronze in the 50m backstroke at the World Short Course Swimming Championships 2008 in Manchester and winning the silver medal together with the Australian 4 × 100 meter medley relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, his most successful year yet. In the Summer Olympics he also took the good fifth place in the 100 meters back.

A year later, he celebrated at the world swimming championships in Rome in 2009 winning the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 meter medley relay. In all single Konkurenzen on the back distance it was rather disappointing for Delaney. About 50 meters and 100 meters backstroke, he retired as a 16 or 10 in the semifinals and 200m backstroke as 17 already in the run- off.

In 2010 he was able to convince at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships 2010 in Irvine about his special routes again by the silver and the 100m backstroke won the bronze medal over 50 meters back. He also won a bronze medal with the Australian 4 × 100 meter medley relay. In the same year he was swimming at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke respectively on the third place; the 4x100 -meter medley relay, he won the gold medal.

Delaney currently trains with coach Shannon Rollason.
