Atlantic Canada

As Atlantic provinces of Canada (English or Atlantic provinces Atlantic Canada, French provinces de l' Atlantique or Canada atlantique ), the four most eastern member states of the Canadian state designated bordering directly and exclusively to the Atlantic Ocean.

From north to south these are Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Iceland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The latter three are also known as Maritime Provinces (English Maritime provinces, French provinces Maritimes).

In 2007, the four Atlantic provinces together had 2,332,535 inhabitants.

History

The term was first used by Joey Smallwood, the first premier of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. After the accession of Newfoundland and Labrador to the Canadian state in 1949 the citizens should be the impression of a growing attachment to the three provinces, its southern neighbor, already longer to Canada belonging mediated (New Brunswick and Nova Scotia since 1867, Prince Edward Iceland since 1873 ).
