Augustus Toebbe

Augustus Maria Toebbe ( born January 15, 1829 in Meppen, † May 2, 1884 in Covington, USA) from 1869 to 1884 second Catholic Bishop of Covington.

Life

Augustus Maria Toebbe was born in Emsland and emigrated to the United States, where he was ordained in 1854 at the feast of the Exaltation Archbishop John Baptist Purcell for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati as a priest. Up to 1866, was pastor of the German Toebbe St. Philomena Parish in Cincinnati.

On September 24, 1869, Pope Pius IX. him for the second Bishop of Covington. On 9 January the following year he donated the Bishop of Columbus, Sylvester Horton Rosecrans, episcopal ordination. Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Fort Wayne, John Henry Luers, and the Bishop of Louisville, William George McCloskey.

Toebbe died at the age of 55 and was buried at St. Mary's Cathedral in Covington. He was later reburied at St. Mary Cemetery in Fort Mitchell.
