Avia B.122

The Avia B -122 was a Czechoslovakian aerobatic aircraft of the 1930s. She took in this period in several international competitions where she cut quite successful.

History

It was designed by František Novotny as a biplane with wings made ​​of wood and a body made ​​of steel tubing. In the area of the bow was the cladding sheet steel, the rest of the aircraft was covered with fabric.

The first prototype with the registration OK -AVI first flew in the spring of 1934, equipped with a 7- cylinder radial engine Walter Castor. A little later the OK AVE followed by a change of rowing and a Castor - II engine with NACA hood. With this machine, numerous aerobatic competitions were contested.

The Czechoslovak Armed Forces ordered 45 aircraft with the military designation B -122, which were also delivered.

In 1936 the improved Ba -122 appeared with the powerful Avia Rk -17 engine. A total of six aircraft of the type adopted in 1937 at the aerobatic competition of the Zurich meeting part. Three with the Avia - motor started in the class B (aircraft with engines of 10-20 liter displacement ). It took Lt.. František Novák the first place, Lt.. Petr Siroky the third and Adj Josef Hubacek the fourth. The other three Ba - 122, 9-cylinder Walter Pollux had as a drive, won in the class C (motors of more than 20 l capacity ) with the Lt. Novák and Siroky and adj Vyborní the three places, where they had, however, no other competitors.

The Czechoslovak military ordered 35 pieces of this type, 15 more went to the Soviet Air Force.

After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by German troops used the government took over twelve Ba -122 and B -122, twelve more were sent to Bulgaria. Subsequent samples were the specific competition version B- 222, B -322 with a closed cockpit and B -422, wherein the upper supporting surface was displaced downward and connected directly to the hull.
