Azal Branco

The white grape Azal Branco is an indigenous variety from Portugal. It is cultivated there for over 3,080 acres; recommended, it is in the valley of the Douro and approved it is for the regions Beira Interior Norte Beira Interior Sul.

It provides an acid embossed, resembling Riesling wine with very specific varietal bouquet. Use place the wine in the area around Basto, Penafiel and Amarante in white Vinho Verde.

In addition to the variety Azal Branco still include the varieties Alberto Azal, Azal Acedo, Doce Azal, Azal Azal Tinto Preto and to the family of Azal.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The white, woolly shoot tips pointing slightly Ruby approaches ( Anthocyanflecken ). The young leaves are on the leaf surface (also called lamina ) blistered and woolly on the undersides.
  • The full-blown, three-lobed leaves are medium in size and annular. The petiole is U-shaped. On the underside of the leaves are downy. Their edges are covered with small square teeth.
  • The medium-sized, yellow- green grapes have a cylindrical to conical shape. They are compact. The slightly elliptical berries are medium in size. They are often deformed by the pressure of the adjacent berries.

Azal Branco is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.

The grape Azal Branco is known as Lixa Carvalha, Espinheira, Gadelhudo and Pinheira also among the synonyms Asal Branco, Azal Bianco, Asal da Lixa or Azal.
