Aztec mythology

In the life of Aztec religion and its deities played a central role. All important decisions were made by means of religious rituals (see also sacrificial cult of the Aztecs ). Most Aztecs lived from agriculture, especially the cultivation of maize. For this reason, for example, had the rain god Tlaloc as rain donor a very significant role for common people.

In Aztec religion, there are a multitude of gods and deities. Since the gods have different meanings and functions have been assigned, some of them also have several names. In addition, there were by the Spanish transcription of the Nahuatl language different spellings.

The gods were represented either in animal form, in animal -human shape or as a ritual object. Each god was one of three areas of the world of the gods:

  • The creator deities in the world About Topan ( = sky)
  • The fertility gods in the middle world Cemanahuatl ( = earth)
  • The gods of the underworld, Mictlan
