Geographical Location

Bad Kösen is located in the northernmost quality wine growing region of Saale- Unstrut on the B 87 ( Via Regia ) between Apolda and Naumburg ( Saale) in the Natural Park Saale Unstrut Triasland, about 40 km southwest of Halle.

Environment

History

Kosen was founded in the Middle Ages as Vorwerk Cusne the monastery Pforta. The construction of the stone bridge over the Saale, the Via Regia took the shorter course over Kösen. Until the 18th century was the place for rafting on the river Saale of some importance. Salt production started in 1730 became unprofitable in 1857, could be obtained cheaper than in Staßfurt salt. Bad Kosen has three parks, including one in the city center with historical change halls, a modern thermal pool, a zoo and two ponds. By 2005, the park was still densely wooded.
