Bais, Negros Oriental

Bais City is a Filipino town (Component City ) in the province of Negros Oriental. Bais City is 48 km from the provincial capital Dumaguete City.

Geography

In the area of Bais City, there are two bays, of which such a declaration, the name Bais is derived. The southern bay is named Bais Bay, in it lies the island Talabong. The coastline is mostly covered with mangroves, whose existence is threatened by the increasing population.

Upstream of the coast are coral reefs.

On the edge of the city center, the river flows Pelarta. There is a controversy about whether the name Bais is derived from the eels in this river, in the local language bais.

The water of the river is used for irrigation of the nearby sugar cane farms. This irrigation is essential for the success of the sugar cane cultivation in this area.

The river also has a major impact on the urban geography, as in the mangrove sediments, while the earlier annual flood season, were deposited. The former mangrove swamps were dry and thus can now be populated. In the late 1970s, a flood control system has been set up under the government of Genaro Goni. This flood control system includes the city center and the low -lying land and reduces the number and severity of flooding during the rainy season.

Religions

The dominant faith in Bais is Catholicism.

Culture

Every year on September 10th there will be a festival ( fiesta ) in honor of the local saint Nicholas of Tolentino. This festival dates back to the period of Spanish colonial rule. On this occasion, the inhabitants Bais prepare meals for all visitors. This is a tradition that is also found in many other places in the Philippines. Likewise, madrigals and parades are held.

Economy

Bais City is the largest sugar producer in the province of Negros Oriental. There are two sugar mills in the city; the Central Azucarera de Bais was established in the early 20th century by the Spanish company Tabacalera and is one of the oldest sugar mills in the country. The other sugar mill is the United Robina Sugar Milling Corporation ( URSUMCO ) (formerly United Planters Milling Corporation ( UPSUMCO ) ) and was built in the 1970s by the Marubeni Corporation of Japan as a project of Ignacio Montenegro, which also has Spanish roots.
