Balmenach distillery

Balmenach is a whiskey distillery in Cromdale, Morayshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.

History

The distillery was probably founded in 1824 by James McGregor. 1897 from the Glenlivet Distillery Balmenach Company. In 1930 the distillery was sold to Scottish Malt Distillers ( SMD). From 1941 to 1947 Balmenach was closed. 1962 will be extended to six the number of stills of four. 1964 Malting floors are closed and replaced by a Saladin box which was used until the 80s. 1987 buys United Distillers (UD) the distillery. In May 1993 Balmenach was closed. In December 1997, the distillery of Inver House Distillers was purchased and on 2 March 1998, production began again.

Production

The water belonging to the Speyside distillery dates back to the Cromdale Burn. The malt is purchased from United Distillers Maltings. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (7.6 t) of stainless steel and six fermentation tanks (wash backs) douglas-fir ( per 40,000 liters ). Is distilled in pot stills six, three of which are coarse blisters (wash stills ) ( 16.000 l ) and three fine blisters ( spirit stills ) ( per 10,500 liters ) which are heated by steam.

Samples

Currently, there are no original bottling Balmenach; the sherry -heavy 12 -year-old bottling from the Flora & Fauna series of Diageo has disappeared from the market and can only be found with collectors. Since the production is only in 1998 underway again, it will probably take even a few years until transferred back to a original bottling on the market. Independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail still have some Balmenach bottlings in the program.
