Baltasar Brum

Baltasar Brum Rodriguez ( * June 18, 1883, † March 31, 1933 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan lawyer, diplomat, politician and president of the country from 1919 to 1923 His political beliefs were influenced by the former President, José Batlle y Ordóñez, below. where he served from 1913 to 1915 as Minister of Education; after 1915 he worked as Minister of the Interior and then under President Feliciano Viera as Foreign Minister. In this function Brum sat for friendly relations with the USA.

During his tenure, he tried to stabilize the country's economy but faced a broad opposition from his own party ( Partido Colorado) and Luis Alberto Herrera of the Partido Nacional opposite.

On March 31, 1933 after Gabriel Terra had coup to power, Brum tried to lead an uprising against Terra. But after he had detected in the course of the day that he would not succeed, he committed suicide in Montevideo on the open road suicide. He was 49 years old. His brother Alfeo Brum later became vice president of Uruguay.

In 1927 Brum was President of Banco Hipotecario del Uruguay.
