The Bank of America 500 is the second race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, near Charlotte. It is usually held in October and runs over a race distance of 500 miles. Prior to 1966, the race distance was 400 miles.

Due to the high ratings of the 2002 race, which was started due to rain three hours later and went to the prime time to end, they decided that the track officials to postpone the race on Saturday night.

In the 2002 season, Jamie McMurray scored as a replacement for the injured Sterling Marlin a new record in the modern era of NASCAR since 1972, after just two races he won his first race.
