Barbara Morgan

Barbara Radding " Barb " Morgan ( born November 28, 1951 as Barbara Radding in Fresno, California, USA) is an American astronaut.

Morgan ended 1969, the Hoover High School in Fresno ( California). She received in 1973 a Bachelor in Human Biology from Stanford University in Palo Alto. In 1974 she received from the College of Notre Dame in California permission ( Teaching Credential ) to work as a teacher.

Morgan began her work as a teacher in 1974 at the Arlee Elementary School in Arlee (Montana). From 1975 she taught for three years at the McCall - Donnelly Elementary School in McCall (Idaho ).

Teacher in Space

On July 19, 1985 Morgan was selected as a replacement candidate for Christa McAuliffe Teacher in Space for the project. From September 1985 to January 1986 both trained together with the crew of the Challenger for mission STS -51 -L at the Johnson Space Center (JSC ) in Houston (Texas ).

McAuliffe came in the Challenger disaster in January 1986 killed and Morgan took over their duties. For several months, she traveled through the United States and held on behalf of NASA presentations. In the fall of 1986, Morgan returned to Idaho to work again as a teacher at McCall - Donnelly Elementary School. The Teacher - in-Space project was terminated.

Astronauts activity

In January 1998, NASA came back to Morgan and set it as the first Educator Mission Specialist ago. After selecting a two-year training and skills began to " teacher in space". Having initially perceived technical tasks at NASA, she later worked in the Mission Control Center as Capcom.

STS -118

Morgan was selected in December 2002 for their first space flight.
