Barjac (Gard)

Barjac is a commune with 1575 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region.

Geography

Barjac situated on a hilltop between the westerly flow Céze and the eastern Gorges de l' Ardèche.

History

The buildings of the village are taken largely the Renaissance. The center of the old town is characterized by houses, narrow streets and squares of this era. The Castle of the Counts of Roure, formerly called Citadelle, was repeatedly rebuilt since the 12th century. In the former stables is now a library in the former kitchen space a cinema. The end of July is the annual venue of the festival castle chansons et paroles ( songs and words).

Personalities

Lived between 1993 to 2008 and worked for the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer in the former silk factory at La Ribaute Barjac on a former industrial site of 35 ha
