Bay (horse)

As Brown is called a horse with brown coat and black mane and tail.

Wild-type Brown

The black on the legs is not enough up to the carpal and hock. Often the color with weak crosswalk is connected to the legs.

Normal Brown

The legs are up on the carpal and hock addition, black, often is added a black face mask. They often have a very reddish brown.

Black Brown

A black and brown can be dark brown, but it can almost act like a stallion. The muzzle, some hair around the eyes, the area before the approach of the hind leg and the inside legs are always recognizable brighter than the rest of the body.

Possible confusion:

  • Rappe: mane, tail and back can be bleached by the sun, so that they act brown. The area around the eyes, the nose and the area in front of the hind legs are never brighter than the rest of the coat.
  • Smutty: A Brauner with Smutty can greatly resemble a Black-Brown.
  • Cream gene of the horse: Dark Earth-colored can have such a small brightening that they are not visible distinguished from non- brightened horses.

Time-related changes in color

For very young foals later black areas of the legs of the brown are usually still bright, sometimes even almost white.

Brown often have a darker coat in the winter than in the summer.

Genetics: The agouti locus

There are three variants of the color of the brown, the wild-type brown, the normal brown and black and brown, by different alleles of the agouti locus order of Dominant by recessive:

  • A : wild-type Brown
  • A: Normal Brown
  • A: Black

All alleles can be masked by the fox gene.

Breeds

Brown with its shades is the most common color and occurs in horses of all breeds. The Cleveland Bay and the Maremma are breeds where there are only brown.
