Bebra–Fulda railway

The railway line Bebra - Fulda is a north-south trending, continuous double track and electrified main line.

It was built as part of the Bebra - Hanau railway or Kurhessische State Railways, which has risen after the Prussian annexation of Hesse-Cassel in the Frankfurt- Bebra railway.

During the period of German division it was part of the north-south route, the most important and busiest connection of the former German Federal Railways between northern and southern Germany.

History

Construction of the track began at the station Bebra the Hessian Friedrich- Wilhelms- North Railroad Company ( railroad Kassel- Gerstungen ). On January 22, 1866, the first section was completed to Bad Hersfeld. The opening of the second section about Hünfeld to Fulda followed in the same year on October 1, 1866.

Route

The route follows the valley of the Fulda Bebra first. In Bad Hersfeld, the route then turns to the valley of Haune. This track alignment has been chosen so as not to leave Kurhessisches territory since the time of the route building was a part of the valley of the Fulda to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. On the way to Fulda therefore the ridge between the two river valleys in a complicated track alignment with fifty yards lost slope and the castle Hauner tunnel had to be overcome.

Crossings

On this route there are currently seven crossings.

Just north of Bad Hersfeld, there are two level crossings ( Reilos and Friedlos ). Both were converted to EBÜT systems. The other crossings south of Bad Hersfeld are all still warden served.

  • Reilos ( EBÜT system)
  • Friedlos, landfill ( EBÜT system)
  • Call barrier between Bad Hersfeld and Unterhaun
  • Unterhaun (item 149) - abandoned
  • Oberhaun, station ( electric full barriers )
  • L3471/B27 at Haunetal Wehrda ( zusätztlich with light warning device )
  • Hünfeld Breitzbacher way and Haunstraße (both mechanical interlocking by full barriers )

It is planned to replace the transitions in Upper and Unterhaun by road bridges. The reasons lie not only with the long waiting times due to high traffic, but also the bridges over the Fulda to be replaced by new buildings, for example because the Fuldabrücke vehicles can only accommodate up to 9 tons while it is very narrow.

From 2012 the railway crossing Haunstraße should be replaced in Hünfeld with the train station reconstruction by a pedestrian underpass. The call barrier in Unterhaun has now been abandoned without replacement. Then only four crossings between Bebra and Fulda remain at the end.

Operation

Until the Second World War, the route was mainly the transport Frankfurt -Leipzig. Due to the German division of this compound lost its importance. Only the transit trains to Berlin and the interzonal trains sailed over long distances even this route - with locomotive and direction changes in Bebra, since the Berliner curve was shut down before the station Bebra, which had allowed the direct drive to the east, bypassing this station. The traffic between Frankfurt and Hannover however increased significantly. In the south of Bavaria Connection direction on the Fulda -Main railway was more important. The railway line Bebra - Fulda became a part of the north - south route of the former Federal Railroad. In 1963, the line was electrified.

Through the Fall of the inner German border in 1989 and the opening of the high-speed line Hannover -Würzburg in 1991, the situation changed again. With the opening of the connection Fulda- Bebra lost the intercity trains that ran between Hannover on the one hand and Frankfurt am Main and Würzburg other. The East-West Highway is additionally driven since 1992, the 120- minute intervals with Intercity and since 2000, the 120- minute intervals with ICE on the line Dresden -Leipzig -Erfurt -Eisenach -Frankfurt and individual Intercity trains as an amplifier. But mainly goods trains here. Further, there are night trains.

The public transport is operated since 10 December 2006 by the cantus transport company. The two lines Fulda -Kassel and Fulda Göttingen every two hours overlap to a ride per hour on the railway line Fulda- Bebra. Two regional express train pairs of DB Regio drive in rush-hour traffic from Bebra to Frankfurt and back.

In freight transport, but the track is still part of the north-south axis and there is still heavy traffic.
