Bellshill

Bell Hill is a place in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, located in the suburbs of Glasgow, two miles north of Motherwell. Bellshill had 20,200 inhabitants in 2006.

The earliest evidence of settlement in the region of Bell Hill is a place called Belmill, who was arrested on a map by Timothy Pont in 1654. The place consisted of a series of houses that belonged to a Mr. Bell, who owned a stone mine south of it. When the mine was closed, the place and a settlement disappeared was nearby and was called Crossgates. Around 1810 the place took the name Bellshill and continued to grow. This nearby villages such as Black Moss and Sykehead were incorporated.

Middle of the 19th century were large coal and iron deposits were discovered close and some mines were established. The rapid growth also brought immigrants from outside of Bellshill, sometimes even from Lithuania. Many railway stations near arisen as in Mossend, Fallside and Bell Cross.

In the 1870s, a hospital was built. During World War I, the hospital specializes in infectious diseases.

After one of the Halifax Building Society report Bellshill was in the first quarter of 2005, the place in the UK where property prices have risen the most at 46%.
