Bengt Hallberg

Bengt Hallberg (* September 13, 1932 in Gothenburg, † July 2, 2013 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish jazz pianist and composer.

Life

Hallberg first played classical piano, but wrote his first jazz arrangement was 13 years old. In 1948 he made ​​his first recordings with the big band of Thore Jederby and 1950 with its own trio. He took in 1949 with saxophonist Arne Domnérus in whose trio he also played. In the 1950s, he accompanied many foreign jazz musicians on tour in Sweden such as Stan Getz ( 1951 shots in a quartet or quintet with Lars Gullin, Jack Noren, on The Sound som the Swedish All Stars 2002, including the later standard Dear Old Stockholm ) and Clifford Brown (1953, on Complete Metronome and Vogue master tapes in 2002, with Art Farmer, Quincy Jones arrangements ). Between 1956 and 1963 he worked in the big band of the Swedish Radio. By the way, he studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Stockholm Academy of Music. He took under his own name (for example, Bengt Hallberg at the Golden Circle 1962), with the singer Lill- Babs and with Karin Krog ( Two of a kind, 1982). Next, he worked with Gil Evans and Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band.

He also wrote 1956-1988 to over 25 theatrical and television films in Sweden as a composer film music, including for Mardie ( Madicken ) Films by Astrid Lindgren and a Swedish Pu der Bär- adaptation, as well as choral arrangements ( eg for the Ad Libitum Choir, 1994). He also played the accordion and has also published on the instrument panels. In 1988, he took with his Trio con Tromba with Jan Allan and Georg Riedel and 2004, as so often, with Domnerus Trio ( Improviserat!, Phontastic ). August 2012, he joined yet with Jan Lundgren on the Ystad Jazz Festival.

For Duets for Duke ( Sonet 1978) with Arne Domnerus he received in 1978 Gyllene Skivan of Orkesterjournals as early as 1957 for his album Dinah. He was with the Swedish Django d'Or awarded a Master of Jazz 2001. In 1977 he was awarded the Swedish Literus et Artibus price.

Bengt Hallberg was since the 1950s as one of the greatest jazz pianists of international renown, the influences of Teddy Wilson and Lennie Tristano processed into its own personal style.
