Berardo Eroli

Berardo Eroli (* 1409 in Narni, † April 2, 1479 in Rome, also: Bernardo Eroli, Berardo Eruli or Bernardo Eruli ) was an Italian Cardinal of the 15th century.

Life

Berardo Eroli studied in Rome civil and canon law. Under Pope Nicholas V began his career at the Curia. 1448 was Eroli Bishop of Spoleto. A year later he became vicar general of the diocese of Rome, which he also amongst the followers of Calixtus III. and Pius II remained. Pius II elevated Eroli on March 5, 1460 cardinal priest of Santa Sabina. The consistory was held in Siena. Pius II gave him during his pontificate other important tasks that demanded his legal knowledge. So he became legate in 1462 in Perugia. When Pius II broke up in the summer of 1464 to Ancona, from where he wanted to start one of his planned crusade, Cardinal Eroli accompanied him. The sick at this time Pope died a few weeks later. At the conclave for the election of a successor he did not participate. 1466 to 1467 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals. Berardo Eroli participated in the conclave of 1471, in which Sixtus IV was elected. The new pope took him in 1474 to the rank of cardinal bishops, and gave in the suburbicarian Diocese of Sabina. In the same year he passed the leadership of the diocese of Spoleto down in favor of a nephew.

Berardo Eroli was still a hospital and a monastery in his home town of Narni erected and eventually died in Rome. His grave is located in the Vatican Basilica.
