Mountain in the Drau Valley is a municipality with 1320 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the Upper Drau Valley between the Gail Valley Alps with the Jauken (2200 m) in the south and the north-facing slope of the rising Kreuzeckgruppe (2800 m). Through the municipal area leads the Drau Valley road (B 100), the mountain with the district capital Spittal an der Drau ( 40 km east) or with Lienz in East Tyrol ( about 35 km to the west ) connects.

History

The first written mention of the village of Berg in the Drau Valley - as well as most places in the church today - was 1267/68 as " Perige " owned right directory (Land ) of the princely castle Greifenburg and about the same time in the land register of the parish church mountain. The origin of the name may be in the mountain mining, since Drassnitz north of Dellach and in the Gnoppnitz existed silver and copper mining. The earliest finds are traces of a Roman road that led to the well-known since pre-Celtic times mining town Gurina iG. Even today, you see along the south slope of the Jauken parts of this road in the "Roman trail ". His early importance was the place especially by the former Sanctuary Branch Church of St. Athanasius.

1849, the cadastral mountain and mountain Goppel were first united to the local mountain community. Emberg initially remained independent local church, but was turned down by the adoption of the Carinthian village of order 1864. The current community name " mountain in the Drau Valley " was set on 1 July 1965.

Population

According to 2001 census mountain has 1,373 inhabitants, of which 97.9 % are Austrian citizens in the Drau Valley. 93.2 % of the population are Roman Catholics, 2.5% to 1.9% are Protestant Church and the Islamic faith. 1.5 % of the population is non-denominational.

Culture and sights

  • Set over mountain parish church of the Virgin Birth is a late Romanesque building, which was first documented in 1267. In the second half of the 15th century it was converted into a fortified church, where the original shape of the tower and the nave were changed.
  • The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Athanasius (St. Athanas at mountain ) is located south from the village near the Drau Valley Road in a flat field. It was first mentioned in 1443 and probably built on a very old sanctuary. Inside the church you will find Roman period grave inscription fragments. 1485 it was consecrated by the Bishop of Caorle the holy Nonosius. The Nonnosusverehrung in Upper Carinthia, it is for St. Peter is in wood in Lendorf and Molzbichl, goes back to the Christianization of Bavaria Freising. Even today Nonnosus is a by- saint in Freising Cathedral. Later Nonnosus was replaced by St. Athanasen. The church was formerly a popular pilgrimage church.

About 10 years ago the non-profit Stella Carinthia was founded when the lying above the hamlet Emberg Emberger alp proved ideal astronomical observation site in the mountain. The Astroverein built there a public observatory and organized every autumn the International telescope meeting on the Emberger Alm

The local council of mountain in the Drau Valley has 15 members and is composed as follows since the municipal elections in 2009 together:

Coat of arms

The coat of arms has been selected from a variety of designs by a vote of the people and gave the community on March 16, 1989. The official blazon of the arms is:

The green shield reason indicates the forest wealth in the municipal area, the silver wave band the Drava. The " mountain" of the community, the Jauken is indicated by the stylized silhouette in chief. In the cardiac location of the crest the parish church Nativity of Mary is shown with one of the numerous Romanesque round charnel house of the construction of the church. The crown stands for the Marie patronage of the church, the bishop's cap with the bishop and cross bar for the Holy Nonnosus, an early Christian local saint to whom the church was originally dedicated in the valley ( in the 17th century was set in its place Athanasius as a patron ).
