Geographical location

The municipality is located in the middle and upper part of the Lieser at the south portal of the Katschberg tunnel and extends from the valley floor up to the Hafnereck on the main ridge of the Hohe Tauern. As a scenic designation for the entire municipality Katschtal is common.

Rennweg bordered to the north and east by four Salzburg, on the south three Carinthian municipalities:

History

On the southern edge of the current municipal area, between the towns of Ried and St. Nicholas, was from the 12th century (first mentioned in 1197 ) the castle Rauchenkatsch, ancestral seat of the Lords of Katsch. From the late Middle Ages, the Church of St. Peter was their burial ground. The present municipality was a long time in Salzburg possession, some of the gentlemen of Katsch are also attested as Salzburg magistrates and judges of Rauchenkatsch.

On May 4, 1201 strong earthquake shook the Liesertal. The epicenter is located according to the latest findings between St. Peter, Rennweg and Gmünd. Reported is the destruction of the Archbishop of Salzburg ' Katscher castle. Damages are handed down in the Drau valley beyond. In this earthquake the castle white stone was destroyed.

In the formation of the local church in 1850 the municipality was larger than today, because in 1868 were originally to the municipality Rennweg associated cadastral riders and St. Nikolai separated and connected to the municipality of Gmünd. Since then, the community has not changed in its expansion.

Took place on 1 July 2007 following the decision of the Carinthian Landtag of 10 May 2007, the survey of the market town.

Population

According to the 2001 census, Rennweg has 2,025 inhabitants, of which 98.3 % are Austrian citizens. 95.7 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 2.4% for the Protestant Church, 1.2 % have no religious confession.

Culture and sights

  • The parish church of St. Peter in the village of St. Peter was first documented 1184-1197. After a fire in 1642, the essential part of the present building was erected, part of an earlier building were found in the southern part of the nave. The altar is one of the richest and most magnificent baroque altars of Carinthia.
  • The Church of St. George in the village of St. Georgen was first mentioned as a branch church of St. Peter in 1351. In 1778 the church was because shortly before the collapse demolished standing and arg verschricket and rebuilt. In a large village fire in 1861, the tower was destroyed and rebuilt in 1892. The altarpiece depicts Saint George slaying the dragon and was created by Katschtaler artist Josef Messner.

Townscape design

2011 Rennweg was chosen by the Entente Florale Europe "The most beautiful flower village of Europe ".

Economy and infrastructure

The villages in the municipality were all strongly influenced by agriculture. In recent decades, tourism plays, both in summer and in winter, an increasingly important role.

Through the municipal area leads the Tauern motorway A 10, whose south portal is through the Katschberg tunnel in the municipal area, the provinces of Carinthia and Salzburg connects. About the Katschberg the Katschberg road B 99 leads north across the Lungau in Bischofshofen, in the south it extends over Gmünd to Spittal an der Drau largely parallel to the Tauern motorway.

Coat of arms

The motif of Rennweger emblem has its origins in the seal of the Lords of Katsch and symbolizes a covenant of fidelity in the form of a handshake. The oldest preserved, albeit damaged proof of this seal can be found on the foundation charter for the Lady Altar in the Church of Malta, Albrecht von Katsch exhibited on 1 February 1349.
