Obervellach is a market town with 2288 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the south of Austria in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the south of the Tauern Moelltal main ridge. Part of the municipality is located in the National Park Hohe Tauern.

History

A " Velach " was first mentioned in the 10th century in a charter of Bishop Abraham of Freising, who reigned 957-993. The name is likely derived from the Slovenian bel (White ) (see Vellach ). Traffic

Obervellach is located at the Tauern railway that runs above the village. Nearest railway station is today Mallnitz - Obervellach. Coat of arms
