Bert McCaffrey

( * April 11, 1894 in Listowel, Ontario, † April 15, 1955 ) John Albert " Bert" McCaffrey was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who in his playing days from 1916 to 1933 among others for the Toronto St. Patricks, Pittsburgh Pirates and Canadiens de Montréal has played in the National Hockey League. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1924 he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

Bert McCaffrey began his career as a hockey player in the amateur field for several teams in the Senior League Ontario Hockey Association. There he played 1916-1920 for one year that for the Toronto Riverside's, Toronto Crescent, Toronto Dentals and the Parkdale Canoe Club. From 1920 to 1924, the defender in the OHA for the Toronto Granites ran on, with whom he 1922 and 1923 respectively to the Allan Cup, the Canadian amateur championship titles won. With the Granites in 1924, he represented Canada at the Olympic Winter Games. From 1924 to 1927 he played for the Toronto St. Patricks of the National Hockey League.

The 1927/28 season began McCaffrey again in Toronto before he was transferred in December 1927 in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Pirates. There he remained for two years before he was released to the Canadiens de Montréal in December 1929 in exchange for Gord Fraser. With the Canadiens, he immediately won the end of season 1929/30, the prestigious Stanley Cup. The season 1930/31 started the Canadians with the Canadiens in the NHL. Although his team again won the Stanley Cup and he had completed enough games, but his name was not engraved on the trophy since it was released mid-season at the Providence Reds of the Canadian - American Hockey League. In the CAHL he played from 1931 to 1933 for the Philadelphia Arrows, before he ended his career at the age of 39 years.

Internationally

For Canada McCaffrey participated in the Olympic Winter Games in 1924 in part in Chamonix, where he won the gold medal with his team.
