Bhutan is one of the most unsuccessful teams in the AFC continental federation. It's her have not yet been able to qualify for a World Cup or the Asian Championships. In her story, she could not leave until three games as the winner.

An interesting portrait of football in Bhutan provides the documentary The Other Final, which reports on the parallel to the finals held in 2002 match against the then latest FIFA World Ranking Montserrat. Bhutan won the game 4-0 in Thimphu. Currently Bhutan is with 0 points on the last place in the FIFA World Ranking ( as of 15 July 2012).

In 2007, the Austrian coach Helmut Kronjäger took over the national team. He was in charge at the same time the U-16 national team. Its primary task was to improve the structures in the country. To own championship was introduced under him. The goal Kronjägers was to improve the national team so far that they could participate in the qualification for the Asian Cup in 2011. However, it still lacked the financial means.

Bhutan, due to its mountainous location does not have a soccer field according to European standards. Only five courses are playable. A stadium is being planned.
